Is anyone apart of the MHS or been to meetings. I am thinking I'm going to go to its next meeting on Feb 6. Do you need to sign up as a member first or can you take care of that at the meeting. I really need to start finding friends that are into herps. Are there a lot of people at the meetings or is it really small. I have had a lot of people tell me to start going but they never go, they say they don't have time.

It all depends on the speaker or the topic for the month on how the turnout is. I have gone a few times and just find a lot of the people there to be annoying(thats just me). You don't need to be a member to attend the meetings, but if you see any animals you want to adopt then you'll have to sign up. I think it might cost $20 or around that price for a yearly membership, it also depends on what kind of membership you want. Most of the people that I would want to talk to in the reptile industry don't usually show to the meetings unless there is a really good speaker.

I agree, the meeting are good if the speaker is good. The people that are at the meeting every month tend to be know it alls, but you can meet so very nice people at the meetings too. I do my own thing when it comes to reptiles, the meeting last too long and are not that fun to me. It does not take much for me to get goin on herps , I do not need to go to a meeting. Smile

For fun I go to the pet shop on Sat or Sun for a few hours and talk. I like seeing new things and finding out new things. I have only been into herps for 1 1/2 years now, but now I have 50 Crested greckos and bearded dragons. I have picked up some really high end dragons. Leatherbacks, smoothies, hypo-trans. I find it so much fun. There is just not anyone that I know that even like them (the hell with them) So every one that I end up talking to about them are on here or on the phone with people that are out of state. My wife helps out a lot with the reptiles, but I have told her all she knows. So I was thinking maybe I could find just one cool person at the meeting that would be fun to talk to.

Yeah, maybe this may we can all meet up somewhere and go looking for rattlesnakes. Even if we do not find any timbers at least we can find some colubrids.

Never looked for snkes down there, but I fish a lot there for trout. Got bit by a big snake down there last summer. It was bigger than any snake I have seen in Minnesota. I was told it was a bull snake. Damm thing got me in the arm as I was fishing. I was sitting on the shore of a stream in white water state park area.

I've seen a few 6 footers. The bull snakes get a pretty good size. I'd also like to go looking for some ring neck snakes. I haven't found any for years, but hopefully find a few and try breeding them. From what I read They are a tough snake to breed in captivity.

I always go if I'm not working, there are usually a lot of great events they get into; lot of hands on and yearly herping trips for the DNR. We're trying to plan a field trip this year to Reptile Gardens, and will be hosting the midwest herp symposium again in a few years. Lots of great people there to talk to for whatever your interest may be, and its always nice being in a room full of others with interest and passion for reptiles. there are a lot of tastes and interests we need to cover with speakers, so not always are the topics going to interest everyone; people range from young kids who love their pets to students and those with biology interests and other scientific fields, those who are huge into field herping, breeders and others in it as a business, and of course those into it just because they love their hobby. Feel free to stop by a meeting or two to get a feel for it, there is a lot the group really has to offer.
